David Adkins, RN, BSN, registered nurse at Ochsner Health Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.

With over a decade and a half of experience to his credit, Mr. Adkins has carved out a distinguished career in the fields of emergency room medicine, trauma, and rescue. Currently excelling as a registered nurse at Ochsner’s since 2023, he undertakes travel contracts across the United States. Prior to this position, he was active as a registered nurse with various other travel nursing companies since 2017. His extensive career includes roles as an emergency medical technician, paramedic, helicopter search and rescue specialist, fleet marine forces member, dive rescue and recovery specialist, and deputy sheriff. He began his career as a Navy hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy and has also served as a volunteer firefighter.

Laying a solid foundation for his future success, Mr. Adkins pursued an education at the University of West Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He continued his academic efforts by obtaining certification from the Emergency Nurses Association, which he has held since 2011. Additionally, he maintains his membership with the Emergency Nurses Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He believes that the most valuable lesson he has learned in his career is the critical importance of attention to detail. In emergency medicine, each patient presents a unique case, and recognizing these nuances is essential. He emphasizes that emergency room nurses and doctors must be well-versed in a broad spectrum of conditions to provide accurate and effective care.

A standout moment in Mr. Adkins’ career was joining the Navy at the age of 19, where he served as a hospital corpsman performing fleet reinforcements, helicopter searches, and rescues. With a foundation in health care that began at 15 as a lifeguard instructor, transitioning to the hospital side of health care after retiring from the Navy was a natural progression. He attributes his success to his dedication, which includes always striving to develop himself in terms of patient care through travel nursing, experiencing different cultures, and handling various types of care throughout the United States. Looking ahead, he aims to explore new opportunities, potentially transitioning into a different avenue of nursing or health care beyond direct patient care.
