His responsibilities have included supporting emergency response operations and advancing the mission of the Civil Air Patrol. Moreover, Mr. Mahana has shared his knowledge as an instructor for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, further demonstrating his commitment to public safety and preparedness.
Mr. Mahana’s military service spans more than five decades, beginning in 1972 when he joined the U.S. Air Force. Rising to the rank of major, he has played a vital role in both operational and medical capacities, exemplifying leadership and resilience throughout his tenure.
Instrumental in shaping his career trajectory, Mr. Mahana received a Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies from Arizona College of the Bible (now Arizona Christian University) in 1979, a Master of Arts in church administration from California Graduate School of Theology (now Haven University) in 1981, and two associate degrees, both in nursing, from University of the State of New York and Phoenix College in 1983. Furthermore, Mr. Mahana completed coursework in emergency services at the Air Education and Training Command of the U.S. Air Force in 2011, equipping him with specialized skills for high-pressure environments.
Mr. Mahana holds several professional certifications that reflect his advanced clinical competencies. He is a registered nurse, is certified in critical care nursing, and is certified in emergency nursing. He is also a former certified instructor with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
Further distinguishing his expertise, Mr. Mahana holds an active membership in AORN Inc., underscoring his engagement with industry standards and ongoing professional development. Beyond his professional roles, he is deeply involved in civic initiatives. He has volunteered as a registered nurse with the Medical Reserve Corps at the Office of Preparedness and Response within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health since 2014. He has also served as a medical services chair on the external advisory board for medical contingency operations with the First New Allied Expeditionary Force since 2015.
A published author, Mr. Mahana penned “The One I’ll Always Remember-Caring for America’s Wounded Warriors,” which reflects his dedication to compassionate care for service members.
Mr. Mahana’s achievements have garnered significant recognition, including being nominated as a Top Nurse of the Year for 2025 by Today’s Nurse, which will feature an article highlighting his contributions. He also received recognition as the Emergency Services Officer of the Year. Earlier, Mr. Mahana was named Outstanding Young Man of America by Outstanding Young Men of America, selected from among 55,000 candidates, and a testament to his early impact on the field.
