Chris Kalapodis, Transitional Nurse Navigator at Advocate Health Care, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Nursing and Healthcare Administration.

Mr. Kalapodis has established a distinguished career in nursing, marked by a commitment to patient education, care coordination and clinical leadership. Since 2025, he has served as a transitional nurse navigator at Good Shepherd Hospital, part of Advocate Health Care, in Barrington, Illinois. In this capacity, Mr. Kalapodis is instrumental in reducing readmissions among high-risk patients by coordinating care, providing bedside education in accessible language, and fostering patient engagement. He conducts follow-up after discharge for up to one month, arranging additional appointments or care as needed, and maintains communication with care providers to ensure patients understand their health conditions and how to avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Mr. Kalapodis’s approach is rooted in the belief that empowering patients with knowledge leads to better outcomes and greater satisfaction.

Before his current role, Mr. Kalapodis worked as a case manager at Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, from 2023 to 2025. There, he recognized the critical importance of helping patients comprehend their diagnoses, recovery plans and available options, whether returning home with health services, transitioning to skilled nursing facilities or entering inpatient rehabilitation. Mr. Kalapodis consistently encouraged active participation from patients in their own care, striving to ensure they never felt spoken to without understanding the rationale behind their treatment.

From 2022 to 2023, Mr. Kalapodis was an intensive care nurse with MedPro Healthcare Staffing. He also briefly explored hospice care between 2021 and 2022 as an admission nurse at Suncrest Hospice in Northbrook, Illinois. Although he developed a deep respect for the field and its practitioners, Mr. Kalapodis determined that his strengths were best utilized in other areas of nursing.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Kalapodis held the position of clinical nurse consultant at Northwest Community Healthcare (now Endeavor Health) from 2016 to 2021. He managed rapid response and code teams during medical emergencies or cardiac arrests, overseeing operations until the intensive care unit physician assumed responsibility or collaborating directly with them. Additionally, Mr. Kalapodis served as a stroke navigator, working closely with neurologists and teleneurologists to assess potential stroke cases, determine treatment windows and coordinate interventions involving pharmacists or neurosurgical teams, even during off-hours.

Mr. Kalapodis began his nursing career at Alden Estates of Barrington in 2015. During his time at the nursing home, he observed that many patients lacked understanding of their care plans or reasons for rehabilitation. This realization shaped his enduring philosophy that effective patient education is essential for optimal outcomes.

In preparation for his career in the health care field, Mr. Kalapodis earned an Associate of Arts from Elgin Community College in 2013 and a Bachelor of Science in registered nursing from Aurora University in 2015. These credentials have underpinned his clinical expertise and informed his approach to patient-centered care. Mr. Kalapodis holds several credentials that further support his career, including basic life support for health care providers from the American Heart Association Inc., registered professional nurse licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification from the American Heart Association Inc.

Mr. Kalapodis is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association and the American Heart Association Inc., reflecting his commitment to ongoing professional development and industry standards. Beyond his clinical responsibilities, he has contributed to civic organizations, most notably as the community chair for the Rotary Club.

Throughout his career, Mr. Kalapodis has been dedicated to enhancing patient understanding and engagement. One of his most rewarding achievements involved assisting a patient who had been hospitalized over 35 times in 18 months due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. By taking the time to explain her condition and emphasizing medication compliance and pulmonary rehabilitation, Mr. Kalapodis helped her regain strength and independence. After connecting her with appropriate specialists and ensuring she received tailored therapy, her health improved significantly.

Mr. Kalapodis attributes his success to an eagerness to learn from every experience, viewing both achievements and missteps as valuable lessons, and credits his older brother and father for their steadfast encouragement throughout his journey. His mother’s long-standing career as an emergency room nurse also inspired him to pursue nursing. Furthermore, mentorship has played a significant role in Mr. Kalapodis’s development.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Mr. Kalapodis received the DAISY Award from Northwest Community Healthcare (now Endeavor Health) in 2017. He has also received several nominations for Nurse of the Year. Looking ahead, Mr. Kalapodis envisions advancing into professional practice development where he can make a broader impact on hospital care by helping fellow nurses understand not just what actions are required but why they matter. Ultimately, he aims to contribute to system-wide improvements through targeted initiatives within health care organizations.
