Mischa Sorensen, MSN, RN, NI-BC, informatic nurse specialist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care and technology.

With nearly two and a half decades of experience, Ms. Sorensen has built a distinguished career in health care and technology, specializing in nursing informatics. She currently serves in several roles, including informatics nurse specialist and independent consultant since 2024, member of the Nursing Knowledge Big Data Science Initiative at the University of Minnesota since 2023, and clinical informatics chair for Minnesota HIMSS since 2020. Her experience also includes vice president of clinical data analytics at Health Catalyst in 2023, director of clinical outcome improvement at Health Catalyst from 2019 to 2023, and independent consultant with Cheetah Medical from 2016 to 2019. She also worked at Allina Health in various capacities, including clinical standards coordinator from 2015 to 2019, business analyst and registered nurse from 2012 to 2015, registered nurse and MSN from 2001 to 2017, and was a nursing instructor at Anoka Ramsey Community College from 2012 to 2023. Additionally, she has contributed to the field through her publication, “Drop a bundle and save: Reducing surgical site infections across surgical populations,” featured in the Virginia Henderson Library.

Laying a strong educational foundation, Ms. Sorensen earned an Associate of Science in nursing from Anoka-Ramsey Community College in 2003, a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Kaplan University in 2012, and a Master of Science in nursing with a focus on informatics from Kaplan University in 2013. She holds several professional certifications, including registered nurse licensure, acute/critical care knowledge professional from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, informatics nursing (from the American Nurses Enterprise, and legal nurse consultant certified from Legal Nurse Consultants USA. Additionally, she has completed servant leadership training with Health Catalyst and maintains her nursing practice license through Anoka Technical College. She is an active member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, American Nursing Informatics Association, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and the Nursing Knowledge Big Data Science Initiative at the University of Minnesota.

Reflecting on her path, Ms. Sorensen is a third-generation nurse, inspired by her mother and grandmother. She began her career in direct patient care, working in the cardiovascular ICU for many years. Wanting to make a broader impact, she pursued a master’s degree and discovered her passion for informatics, earning the nickname “techie nurse” for her ability to assist colleagues with technology issues. This passion led her to focus on leveraging technology and data to improve patient care on a larger scale. Her most significant accomplishment was leading a successful program at a prominent healthcare system in Minneapolis. Using her informatics expertise, she helped design a comprehensive education initiative and enhance the electronic medical record system.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Sorensen has been honored with the Quality and Patient Safety Award for a large hospital by the Minnesota Hospital Association in 2019 and the Nursing Mentorship Award from Allina Health. She attributes her success to her ability to transform ambiguous challenges into clear, actionable solutions and her unique role as a bridge between technical systems and clinical practitioners. Looking to the future, she envisions a transformative journey in health care, aspiring to leave the sector on a positive trajectory. She is committed to driving advancements in patient care and elevate experiences and outcomes. Her ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact, ensuring that when she steps away, she can confidently reflect on her contributions and take pride in having played a vital role in improving health care for future generations.
