Bridget Boby Mathew, RN, registered nurse at Stanford Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements and leadership in neonatal intensive care.

Ms. Mathew has found a wealth of success as a registered nurse specializing in neonatal intensive care throughout the past four decades. For more than 20 years, she has excelled as a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Stanford Hospital, part of Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. In this capacity, she developed expertise in caring for micro-premature babies and became renowned for her proficiency in drawing blood and starting intravenous lines from arterial access points. Ms. Mathew’s advanced skills led to frequent requests for her assistance during critical emergencies, where her interventions often proved pivotal.

Throughout her tenure at Stanford Hospital, Ms. Mathew was recognized for her dedication and technical acumen. She played an instrumental role in the Versant Program, where she mentored new graduate nurses in the care of critically ill neonates. Her commitment to education and mentorship contributed to improved patient outcomes and fostered a culture of excellence within the unit.

Among Ms. Mathew’s most notable professional experiences was her involvement in the care of a gravely ill infant whose parent was an emergency room physician. The physician specifically requested her due to her reputation for excellence. Employing a specialized technique to relieve the infant’s respiratory distress, she facilitated a remarkable recovery within 24 hours. This case was later highlighted at a charity event, resulting in significant philanthropic support for the neonatal intensive care unit and public acknowledgment of Ms. Mathew’s vital contribution.

Prior to her work at Stanford Hospital, Ms. Mathew accumulated valuable experience as a transport nurse, providing critical care during patient transfers and further honing her clinical judgment under pressure. Earlier in her career, she began as a nurse at the University of Illinois, where she worked for six years and established the foundation for her lifelong commitment to neonatal care.

Ms. Mathew’s educational background includes an associate degree in nursing from Caritas College of Nursing in India in 1974. Her formal academic training provided the essential knowledge and clinical skills that propelled her into the field of neonatal intensive care. Inspired by personal experience, having been born prematurely herself, and by witnessing the challenges faced by mothers and infants in rural India, Ms. Mathew developed a deep-seated passion for helping vulnerable newborns survive and thrive. Encouraged by supportive mentors and family members, she pursued additional training in neonatal intensive care and embraced opportunities to teach others, recognizing that education was key to improving outcomes for premature infants.

Ms. Mathew’s commitment to service extends beyond clinical practice into civic engagement and philanthropy. She is actively involved with her local Indian community and donates regularly to children’s organizations. She has sponsored two girls in India through nursing school, both of whom have since entered the profession, and is currently involved in efforts within the neonatal intensive care unit to support five additional girls pursuing nursing education. Her leadership roles include serving as the vice president of the Women’s Forum and the director on the Building Board, positions through which she has advocated for women’s advancement and community development.

Ms. Mathew’s professional excellence has been celebrated through multiple nominations for the Daisy Award. Likewise, she was presented with numerous ROSE Awards and honored as the Nurse of the Month. These honors reflect both peer recognition and gratitude from patients’ families, many of whom have expressed their appreciation through heartfelt thank-you notes.

Ms. Mathew’s stellar career is marked by unwavering dedication to neonatal health, mentorship of future nurses, active civic participation and compassionate service, qualities that have earned her distinction among peers and lasting gratitude from countless families whose lives she has touched. Looking toward the future, she is considering providing medical foster care for infants requiring ongoing support after hospital discharge or visiting homes to educate parents on optimal infant care practices. Additionally, Ms. Mathews intends to build homes for individuals facing economic hardship.
