Vernon Langford, DNP, Medical Director at Citrus State Healthcare Consultants, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements and leadership in Primary Care.

Dr. Langford has established a distinguished career in primary care, currently serving as a medical director at Citrus State Healthcare Consultants since 2023. He also simultaneously holds the role of director of clinical education, where he provides autonomous primary care across multiple branches of the organization. Dr. Langford’s responsibilities include conducting patient assessments, reviewing national preventive guidelines, and educating patients about their medications and health histories. He also manages annual patient visits, coordinates transitions to case management or total care, and oversees policy development, staff performance goals and employee development. Additionally, Dr. Langford is responsible for medical reviews, health care litigation claims and a range of administrative duties.

Apart from his contributions to Citrus State Healthcare Consultants, Dr. Langford has served as a family nurse practitioner with Landmark Health, now part of Optum, Inc., since 2023, where he continues to deliver comprehensive primary care services. From 2015 to 2023, he worked as a family nurse practitioner at Optum Inc., providing in-house health assessments and managing patient care through various organizational changes within the company. Notably, he was instrumental in adapting to restructuring efforts that saw the transition from Optum Health Call to Optum Landmark Home Health and back to Optum Health Call under a different subsidiary.

Between 2011 and 2015, Dr. Langford excelled as an advanced registered nurse practitioner and director of clinical evaluation at Florida Neuropathy & Pain Center. There, he specialized in neuropathic and interventional pain management, further broadening his clinical expertise in neurology and pain management.

Dr. Langford began his professional journey at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Ohio, starting as a nursing assistant in 2006. He advanced through roles as a staff nurse, lead nurse and charge nurse until 2011, gaining experience in orthopedics and nephrology before transitioning into advanced practice nursing.

Pivotal to his professional success, Dr. Langford received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, in 2008. He also earned a Master of Science in nursing as a family nurse practitioner at the University of Toledo in Ohio in 2011 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in advanced practice nursing from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville in 2022. Dr. Langford holds board certification as a family nurse practitioner and is recognized as an advanced practice registered nurse. These credentials have enabled him to provide high-quality care across diverse clinical settings while mentoring new nurses and advocating for greater representation within the profession.

Throughout his career, Dr. Langford has demonstrated a commitment to advocacy and professional development within the nursing community. He is the treasurer and organization representative for the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners, where he formerly served as president and co-chair. His involvement extends to the legislative team and health policy group with the Florida Nurses Association. Furthermore, Dr. Langford is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association and holds various roles with several additional organizations, such as health policy team member for the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network and UnitedHealth Group International chapter president for the American Association for Men in Nursing. Civically, Dr. Langford serves as a grand medical council member for Prince Hall Freemasonry.

Dr. Langford’s contributions have extended beyond clinical practice into scholarship and thought leadership. He authored “Risk Factors for Suicide in Men” in Nursing Clinics of North America in 2023 and co-edited “The Florida Nurse Practitioner Handbook” with FLANP in 2024, a comprehensive guide for practitioners throughout Florida. Dr. Langford is also an active speaker at conferences nationwide, sharing insights on mental health and professional advocacy.

Dr. Langford’s expertise in this field has been recognized nationally, earning him the distinction of being named one of America’s top nurse practitioners in primary care. Among other recent honors, he was named Icon in Nursing for Professional Advocacy by the Florida Nurses Association in 2021, received a Lee Cohen Membership Award from the American Association for Men in Nursing in 2022, and was named America’s Top Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care by POCN in 2022. Dr. Langford attributes his achievements to his strong advocacy for others, a value central to his approach to nursing, and to the unwavering support of his peers.

Inspired by family members who worked in health care during his upbringing in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Langford initially pursued pre-medical studies before switching to nursing. Looking ahead, he intends to continue developing his clinical skills while expanding his advocacy work within health care policy. He also plans to transition into academia to help train future generations of nurses while publishing additional clinical works focused on mental health and increasing his engagement as a speaker on related topics.
