Orlando Sanchez Herrera, Family Nurse Practitioner at Conviva Belle Glade and Owner and Assistant Behavior Analyst at Acumen Behavior Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Family Medicine.

Mr. Sanchez Herrera has established a distinguished career in family medicine and geriatrics, characterized by resilience and adaptability that span international borders. For the past year, he has served as a family nurse practitioner at Conviva Belle Glade, where he is responsible for caring for Medicare patients as well as some commercial Medicaid patients. In this capacity, Mr. Sanchez Herrera manages chronic conditions in patients aged 65 and older, including hypertension and HIV. His expertise in family medicine and geriatrics has enabled him to provide comprehensive care, often delivering medical services that are otherwise difficult to access. Mr. Sanchez Herrera is particularly proud of his ability to practice medicine in the U.S. as a family nurse practitioner, continuing his commitment to patient care despite not holding a medical license as a physician.

In addition to his role at Conviva Belle Grade, Mr. Sanchez Herrera has owned and operated Acumen Behavior Inc. since 2018, where he works as an assistant behavior analyst. Through this venture, he provides behavioral analysis services on weekends, demonstrating his dedication to supporting individuals with behavioral health needs. Mr. Sanchez Herrera’s entrepreneurial spirit and clinical acumen have allowed him to make a meaningful impact in both medical and behavioral health fields.

Before relocating to the U.S., Mr. Sanchez Herrera practiced as a family physician in Cuba from 1997 to 2014. During this period, he provided essential health care services to families and individuals, building a reputation for compassionate care and clinical excellence. His tenure in Cuba was marked by significant political changes that affected the mobility of Cuban physicians. When his country’s government permitted doctors to travel abroad without prior authorization for the first time, Mr. Sanchez Herrera moved to Honduras. However, by the end of 2014, new regulations threatened severe consequences for Cuban doctors practicing outside the country without official declaration, prompting his decision to seek asylum in the U.S.

Upon arriving in the U.S., Mr. Sanchez Herrera faced challenges related to documentation and credentialing. While awaiting the necessary paperwork from Cuba, he enrolled in nursing school at Miami Regional University in Miami, Florida. He earned a Master of Science in nursing on campus in 2021 and completed a postmaster’s degree in the family nurse practitioner program in 2022. These academic achievements were instrumental in enabling Mr. Sanchez Herrera to continue practicing medicine and providing high-quality care within the scope allowed by his credentials.

Mr. Sanchez Herrera also holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, which he completed in 1997. His advanced training and diverse experiences have been further supported by several professional certifications. He holds a nursing license, as well as credentials as a certified behavior technician, certified behavior analyst, and board-certified family nurse practitioner.

Beyond his clinical roles, Mr. Sanchez Herrera has contributed to civic organizations, such as New Hope, and engaged with scholarly communities through research and publication. He is an author of research published in the International Journal of Acupuncture and has served as a co-author for Redes Magazine.

Throughout his career, Mr. Sanchez Herrera has credited his determination and the support of his parents as key factors in his success. Their spiritual legacy inspired him to pursue a career in medicine with compassion and perseverance, motivating him to help others avoid suffering.

Looking ahead, Mr. Sanchez Herrera intends to pass the medical board examination upon receiving his documents from Cuba, which will enable him to become a licensed doctor in the U.S. and apply for a residency in neurology. His career reflects unwavering dedication to patient care, underscored by academic achievement and community involvement.
