She currently serves as the director of surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, a role she has held since 2011, overseeing two campuses with a combined monthly caseload of over 1000 cases. Her journey in healthcare began with a diploma in nursing from St. Vincent Hospital School in 1982. Subsequently, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Assumption University in 1993 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2015.
Ms. Morrell has navigated diverse roles within the healthcare sector. Her journey commenced as an operating room nurse at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 1996 to 2008. She then served as a cadaver harvester at LifeLink Tissue Bank for four years. Following this, she ventured into surgery center development and assumed various pivotal roles in Florida-based healthcare facilities. Her journey continued with impactful contributions at UMass Memorial Hospital, now UMass Memorial Medical Center, where she fulfilled diverse responsibilities, including those of a MedSurg nurse. Currently, she holds the esteemed position of director of surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, spearheading innovative initiatives and fostering excellence in surgical care.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Morrell is an active member of the Advisory Board at Assumption Nursing Program and holds memberships in Nursing Leaders and the Maxwell Leadership Program. She attributes her success to the mentorship she received early in her career, her refusal to accept defeat in the face of challenges, and her dedication to improving healthcare systems.
In the coming years, Ms. Morrell plans to venture into nurse leadership coaching and consulting, alongside establishing her own business. She also looks forward to joining the Peace Corps, leveraging her skills to serve communities in need globally. With a passion for medical missions, she has undertaken 15 trips to countries such as Ecuador, Peru, and Haiti, providing invaluable healthcare services to underserved populations.
