Leona F. Dempsey, PhD, professor emerita and retired nurse from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of health care education.

Bolstered by nearly 50 years of experience, Dr. Dempsey has cultivated a fulfilling career as a leader in the field of nursing education. Specializing in psychiatry and mental health nursing, she was the first psychiatric-mental health nursing instructor and a professor at the College of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh between 1992 and 2007. She similarly advanced from the position of a staff nurse to a board-certified clinical specialist to  an advanced practice nurse prescriber. Now retired, Dr. Dempsey maintains the honorary title of professor emerita at her university. As part of her dedication to her profession, she is also a former president of the Oshkosh Division of the Mental Health Association and was recognized as the first Master’s-Prepared Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse to work for the City of Chicago Out-Patient Mental Health Centers. In light of her fulfilling career, Dr. Dempsey has largely attributed her success to her determination, and she is proud to have made a difference in the lives of many of her patients and students.

Well-regarded for her scholarly output as well, Dr. Dempsey has authored several noteworthy papers over the course of her career, including “The Lived Experience of Perimenopause and Menopause,” “Connections and Lingering Presence as Cocreated Art” and “A Qualitative Descriptive Exploratory Study of Feeling Confined Using Parse’s Human Becoming School of Thought.” As part of her vocational journey, she pursued a higher education, obtaining a diploma from St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center School of Nursing before ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from DePaul University, a Master of Science in Nursing from St. Xavier University and a PhD in nursing research at Loyola University Chicago in 2005. In her retirement, Dr. Dempsey continues to volunteer with women’s groups and other local hospitals. To commemorate her achievements, she was honored with a Best Paper Award by SAGE Publications in 2008.
