Prior to his current position, he was an acute care nurse practitioner at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, from 2012 to 2019. Mr. Avery served in the United States Navy and has received multiple military honors.

Mr. Avery prepared for his career at Colorado State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He continued his higher education at the University of Virginia, earning a Master of Science in 2012. To keep abreast of his field, Mr. Avery has maintained affiliation with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau and the International Officer Society for Nurses. In his spare time, he enjoys beekeeping, motorcycling and spending time with his family.
