Judy R. Hensley, RN facilitator of the Cancer Support Group at UCSF San Mateo Primary and Specialty Care, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the health care industry.
With over 40 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Hensley has excelled in the field of nursing. Specializing in cancer care and program management, she currently operates as an RN facilitator of the Cancer Support Program at UCSF (University of California San Francisco) San Mateo Primary and Specialty Care. In this role, she attends regular support group sessions for patients battling cancer, where she facilitates conversations and provides aid as needed. Though Ms. Hensley began the support group seven years ago, she only recently joined the team at her care clinic in San Mateo, California, in 2021, where she was able to seamlessly integrate her group sessions as part of the center’s other medical offerings.
Prior to joining UCSF, Ms. Hensley served as a cancer care nurse for Dr. Brian Henderson in San Mateo for 16 years. She also thrived as a home care nurse in the San Francisco Bay Area for 10 years. Ms. Hensley also notably worked as the head nurse at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center from 1982 to 1989. She originally began her career working as a registered nurse in Minnesota for a year before moving to California.
Well-regarded for her scholarly output as well, Ms. Hensley has contributed to the publication of an advanced nursing textbook pertaining to bed sores, in addition to publishing an article in the American Journal of Nursing. Outside of her primary profession, she remains active as a member of the San Francisco Peninsula Writers Club. She also owns and manages her own custom handbasket business. Prior to embarking on her vocational journey, Ms. Hensley pursued a formal education at North Hennepin Community College, earning an Associate of Science in Nursing in 1980.
In light of her numerous fulfilling career, Ms. Hensley largely attributes her success to the love and support of her mother. Accounting for accomplishments, she is most notably proud of her work as a home care nurse, as well as her involvement in oncology. Looking to the future, Ms. Hensley expects she will commit to less nursing work, if not fully retire from it, in the coming years. At the same time, she hopes to complete and publish her book about individuals reaching the end of their lives.
