Sandra Holmes, Nurse Researcher at King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care administration and education.

After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1987 from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi, Dr. Holmes earned a diploma in nursing from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis in 1992. She followed with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1994 from Memphis State University (now known as the University of Memphis) and continued her education with a Master of Science in nursing from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis in 1999 and later a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing from the same school in 2007.

With University of Tennessee Bowld Hospital, Dr. Holmes provided superior care as a staff nurse with the medical-surgical unit from 1993 to 1994, nurse specialist with the gastroenterology diagnostic laboratory from 1994 to 1996 and assistant nurse manager from 1996 to 1999. She additionally served as an advanced nurse clinician with the GI/Pulmonary Unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital East from 1998 to 1999 and an adjunct faculty member with the department of nursing at Shelby State Community College, now known as Southwest Tennessee Community College, from 1999 to 2001.

Dr. Holmes continued her career in health care as a research assistant with the Center for Health Evaluation and Lifestyle Promotion (HELPCenter) from 2001 to 2004, a nurse specialist with Nursing Innovations from 2001 to 2006, an advance practice nurse with Methodist University Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare from 2005 to 2006, a clinical nurse specialist with Cabell Huntington Hospital from 2006 to 2008.

Dr. Holmes imparted her health care knowledge as an adjunct faculty,  with the Ohio University School of Nursing from 2007 to 2008, an associate professor with Kentucky State University School of Nursing in 2008, assistant professor with the University of Louisville School of Nursing from 2008 to 2011 and an associate professor with the Kentucky State University School of Nursing from 2011 to 2013. She then served as interim chair with Kentucky State University School of Nursing in 2014, assistant professor with the College of Nursing at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 2014 to 2015.

From 2016 to 2019, Dr. Holmes flourished as director of nursing for education, development and research with King Saud Medical City in Saudi Arabia and since 2019 as nursing researcher with King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam, in which capacity she conducts and directs various research projects, designs, implements and disseminates research study findings, promotes evidence-based practice, facilitates staff competencies in the research process, initiates and applies for grant funding, participates in the education and development of nursing staff, and in quality improvement projects.

A caregiver by nature, Dr. Holmes became committed to a career in nursing after being involved in an auto accident and requiring emergency care. Being in a hospital and experiencing first-hand the care of nurses cemented in her mind how she wanted to contribute to health and wellbeing of others. Her most notable achievement thus far has been the opportunities to present internationally and nationally. Having the job that she has now affords her the opportunity to work in a more global setting supporting the nursing profession.
