After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1985, Ms. Swann followed with an ADN in nursing from the University of Mobile in 1990. Since 1984, she has provided superior care as a utilization case manager and registered nurse with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. In this capacity, she analyzes health care needs in medical cases to determine further patient care, reviewing medical records and compiling documentation to improve care. Her duties also include getting patients approved for their facilities and procedures and inpatient stay; teaching patients and their family members regarding the process of the procedures they are going through; following up with patients and their family after their surgery; and giving referrals if the patients need social work, physical therapy, or case nursing.
In 1998, Ms. Swann was honored with President’s Award for Outstanding Nursing and Manager of the Year in Home Health. As a career highlight, she mentions guiding new nurses on current care procedures. She also has been involved with different audit procedures for the states of Alabama, Georgia and California. She is presently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing. In the coming years, Ms. Swann would like to run a nursing home because of the lack of good nursing homes for old people to receive excellent care.
