Jane F. Coffman, RN, BSN, PALS, Staff Registered Nurse for Pediatrics and Med/Surg at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatric nursing.
Ms. Coffman was inspired to spearhead a career in health care from her early experiences in caring for her sickly grandmother in her youth. Likewise, her mother’s dream had always been to be a nurse, so she also set out to complete that goal for her. Ms. Coffman graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1975 and immediately began her career in pediatrics at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital. During her 45-year tenure, she found plenty of opportunities for leadership up until her recent retirement in 2020.
Upon reflection of her nursing career, Ms. Coffman is particularly honored to have been the recipient of a Daisy Award, attributing her success to her stubbornness. She notes that nursing over the years has changed from a hands-on and personal profession to one that offers technological-driven treatment of illnesses and diseases. While the technology is imperative, she stresses that the need for human nurses is always necessary for action and empathy. Alongside her dedication to her field, Ms. Coffman has also been a active member of her local United Way. She is proud that her daughter Rebecca is now carrying on this family legacy as a nurse at the same hospital.
