Ms. Woods is a retired registered nurse with more than 30 years of specialized clinical experience. Raised in an Air Force family, Ms. Woods enlisted in 1975 as an instrument landing systems repair specialist, serving to the rank of Staff Sergeant before her military retirement in 1983. Since childhood, Ms. Woods had dreamed of becoming a nurse, and she returned to school to pursue her goal after leaving the Air Force, graduating from Spalding University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She began her medical career the same year as a nurse in the burn unit at the University of Louisville, where she would remain for the next four years.
In 1990, she accepted a position at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where she moved into a surgical intensive care role. Ms. Woods worked with patients requiring highly specialized surgical and trauma care in addition to management of ongoing and comorbid conditions and served as a mentor for new employees and nursing students. Since 1991, she has taught basic life support and advanced cardiac life support and continues to study and maintain her credentials despite retiring from full-time work in 2019. In recognition of her work, Ms. Woods was nominated as 2016 Indiana Veteran of the Year. In her retirement, she remains active in the community of the First Baptist Church of Jeffersonville, where she sings in the choir and writes music.
