Title: Nurse (Retired), Consumer Advocate
Location: Hagerstown, Maryland, United States
Edythe M. Rickard, Retired Nurse and Consumer Advocate, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing.
Ms. Rickard recalls she wanted to be a nurse since the time she discovered what a nurse was. Hailing from a family who stressed the importance of giving back to the community, nursing encapsulated her own desires to care for others while also fulfilling the lessons learned from her family. In 1952, she graduated from Washington County Hospital in Maryland as a registered nurse and went on to work in the field for more than 35 years. Ms. Rickard returned to Washington County Hospital in 1980, where she excelled as a registered nurse until commencing her retirement in 1998.
Alongside her nursing career, Ms. Rickard became increasingly involved in local politics, as she has served as a president and consumer advocate of the Consumer Justice Organization since 1975. Over the years, she has also been affiliated with the Telephone Advisor Panel, Governor’s Consumer Council, Democratic Central Committee and Dispute Settlement Board of the Baltimore and Washington Area. Notably, Ms. Rickard was honored with Life of Leadership Recognition by Women at the Table in 2018.
Presently, Ms. Rickard is a fellow of the Women’s Commission and a member of the United Democrats, Nurses’ Alumni Association and United Methodist Church. Reflecting on her illustrious career, she is proud to have worked with wonderful people and cared for patients to the best of her ability. She credits her mother’s encouraging influence for her own self-confidence and hopes young nurses today can become even more well-rounded than she through constant learning and listening. To attest to her legacy, Ms. Rickard is also listed in the 54th edition of Who’s Who in America and the 27th edition of Who’s Who in the East. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, swimming, traveling and helping the elderly.
