Phyllis Jane Reeder, PhD, RN, Professor at Oliver Nazarene University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing and education.
For over 30 years, Dr. Reeder has influenced countless generations of students through her expertise in community health. Inspired to pursue a career as a nurse by her aunt who worked in the industry, she initially obtained a diploma from South Chicago Community Hospital in 1960. During this time, she began her career as an ICU and CCU staff nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, holding the position from 1961 to 1975. Thereafter, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Olivet Nazarene University in 1975 and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1979. Certified as a gerontological nurse, she completed her education in 1991, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago Illinois.
Throughout her career, Dr. Reeder has served as the president of the Kankakee Board of Health, the vice president of the Kankakee Parish Nurse Network, the president of the Kappa Sigma chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and has maintained professional affiliation with the Illinois Nurses Association. Additionally, she has contributed to a multitude of articles in professional journals. For her contributions in the field, she is honored to have been presented with the Willis Snowbarger Award for Teaching Excellence in addition to receiving recognition from Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and recognition as a fellow of the Illinois Public Health Leadership Institute. Above all, she is gratified to have taught and served as a mentor to many aspiring nurses. Currently enjoying her retirement, she is fortunate to spend quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
