Mr. Vickers celebrates more than 35 years as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist specializing in general and dental anesthesia, and 15 years as the owner and provider at Shelby Anesthesia Services. He began his career in 1969 as a United States Navy Corpsman, serving on active duty in Vietnam as an assistant to a neurosurgeon in a major naval hospital. He remembers his experience in the Navy Hospital Corps as a life-changing experience and a major push to take his education and life more seriously in the future.
After returning to the United States, Mr. Vickers applied to medical school, but was turned down due to his poor grades, and instead applied to nursing school. Between 1970 and 1978, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Memphis and studied at both the St. Joseph School of Nursing and the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia, earning his Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist credential. He considers becoming an anesthetist and having the opportunity to work with major hospitals to be the highlight of his career and is proud to be able to help both patients and providers during challenging treatments. As a part of his commitment to professional growth, Mr. Vickers is active in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and the Regional Anesthesia Society. He has been presented with a Super 12 Award, designating him one of the Top 12 Nurses in the Memphis area, and attributes his lasting professional success to hard work and positivity, noting that “everything he has wanted to do, he has accomplished.”
