Mary Louise Ladd Barker, Retired School Nurse within the Northeastern School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
Motivated by helping others and spreading hope to children in need, Ms. Barker decided to become a school nurse so that she could inspire generations of students. She became a registered nurse through the Harrisburg Hospital School Nursing in 1963 and worked in hospital settings until 1972. In order to achieve her dream of working with children, Ms. Barker earned a Bachelor of Science in education with an emphasis in school nursing from Millersville University in 1973 and a Master of Science in education from Temple University in 1979. Her most recent appointment was as an elementary school nurse at Northeastern School District in Manchester, PA, from 1992 until her retirement in 2004.
Dedicated to ensuring children’s’ health, Ms. Barker worked diligently to establish immunization programs in her school district. She liaised with the United States Department of Health and organized vaccination sites to prevent students from contracting diseases such as measles, rubella and mumps. She believes this work earned her the Regional School Nurse Recognition Award from the PASNAP Educational Conference in 2003. In addition to her work in nursing, Ms. Barker considers a career highlight to be time she spent in church positions whereby she was able to help others in meaningful and fulfilling ways.
