Hazel Lynn Harris, RN, BSN, ONC, Retired Nurse, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in orthopedic nursing.

Coupled with her love for caring for others and her parents’ stress on education, Ms. Harris went on to pursue a career in nursing. In 1974, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University and also began coursework to achieve a Master of Science in Nursing. A distinguished registered nurse for more than 40 years, Ms. Harris served Parkland Health & Hospital Systems in Dallas, Texas for the entirety of her career. Spending her first year as a student nurse, she was then a staff nurse from 1974 to 1980 and a unit manager from 1982 until her retirement in 2016. Likewise, she was a member of the nursing peer review in 1999.

A certified orthopedic nurse, Ms. Harris spent time as a clinical instructor at the American Training Center from 1988 to 1990. Finding great success throughout her tenure, she was a finalist for the Texas Nurses Excellence Award for Community Service from Nurseweek in 2000. Additionally, she was named to Great 100 Nurses by the Dallas/Fort Worth Hospital Council and District Three and Four of Texas Nurses Association in 1998 and was granted the Above and Beyond Award from Parkland Health in 1993. Ms. Harris cites her three awards and contributions to the book “Decision Making in Medical/Surgical Nursing” in 1990 to be the major highlights of her career.

To remain abreast of her industry, Ms. Harris maintains affiliation with the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, National Association Orthopedic Nurses and Orthopedic Nurses Association, of which she served as president for four years. She also remains involved with the National Council of Negro Women Inc., Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Top Leaders of Distinction, Title Five Sorority and Missionary Society. As a testament to her legacy, Ms. Harris can also be found in various editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. In her spare time, she enjoys shopping, traveling and walking.
