Valerie Carter Brumfield, MSN, RN, CNS, CCRN, CEN, Clinical Nurse Specialist Consultant, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical nursing.

When Ms. Brumfield was pondering what career to pursue after high school, there were limited options available to women. Faced with the choices of nursing, teaching or secretarial work, she chose to nurse because she wanted to keep learning. In 1977, Ms. Brumfield acquired a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Louisiana State University, which provided her with the necessary foundation on which to start her career. From 1978 until 1983, she familiarized herself with the industry as a staff nurse at St. Luke’s Episcopalian Hospital. In the years that followed, Ms. Brumfield worked with the Ochsner Foundation Hospital, West Paces Medical Center and South Fulton Medical Center. In 1994, she furthered her education by earning a Master of Science in Nursing from Georgia State University. Today, Ms. Brumfield has retired from full-time nursing, though she remains active in her profession as a clinical nurse specialist consultant in Galveston, Texas.

Throughout her remarkable career, Ms. Brumfield has shared her insights by contributing to numerous articles in professional journals. Some of her most notable achievements include her experience as a co-lead with a neurologist at the Inaugural Stroke Center Initiative, which met the criteria for Primary Stroke Joint Commission accreditation, as well as the 10 years she spent developing, coordinating and instructing the annual basic triage course. As a testament to Ms. Brumfield’s success, she has earned multiple Excellence in Nursing Awards from the Good Samaritan Foundation. Likewise, in 2005, she was honored with the Excellence in Nursing Practice Award from Sigma Theta Tau International’s Alpha Delta chapter, among many other awards in her collection. Looking toward the future, Ms. Brumfield hopes to become officially retired. In recognition of her illustrious reputation, she is featured in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Nursing and the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
