Juanita Garrison, RN, Oncology Nurse at A. B. Chandler Medical Center & Markey Cancer Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in oncology.
Coming from a family of nurses, Ms. Garrison knew early on in her life that she wanted to become a nurse. Her parents were supportive of her career pursuits and after her father passed away, her mother lived with her for 24 years. After her sister’s husband passed away, she moved in with her as well. Ms. Garrison received a diploma from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in professional arts from St. Joseph College in 1991. Originally serving in maternity and newborn nursery in obstetrics, she wanted a change and switched to a focus on oncology nursing. While in oncology she started to do clinical trials and research, which she enjoyed, and she finished her career very research-driven. Looking back on her illustrious career, a highlight for Ms. Garrison was helping and unofficially training new nurses, as well as receiving their feedback. She likes knowing that she helped people.
Ms. Garrison began her career as a staff nurse and acting charge nurse in obstetrics at St. Joseph Hospital in 1960, remaining until 1963. From there, she became a senior team leader in obstetrics at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1963. Staying with the institution until 1975, she changed to the senior team leader of the obstetrics unit in 1967. In 1976, she did work with the clinical privileges of the Cooper Drive Division for the VA Medical Center until 2005. She then became an oncology nurse with the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the A. B. Chandler Medical Center & Markey Cancer Center in 1975 and remained until her retirement in 2005. As a testament to her success, Ms. Garrison received a leadership vase and poinsettias from the Blue Grass Oncology Chapter of the Nursing Society in 2019. She has been inducted as a member of numerous esteemed organizations including but not limited to the Cancer Action Network, American Cancer Society and American Society of Clinical Oncologists. Additionally, she is an emeritus member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. Ms. Garrison and her career accomplishments can also be found in the fourth and fifth editions of Who’s Who in American Nursing.
