Valerie A. Kerr, Public Health Nurse, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing.
From helping to raise and care for her brother with Down syndrome in her formative years, Ms. Kerr believed the perfect professional opportunity for her would be one in nursing. In 1961, she graduated from the Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University in 1983. Ms. Kerr spent the first 13 years of her career, between 1961 and 1974, as a nurse for the Gratiot Community Hospital. Pivoting to teaching, she was a clinical nursing instructor from 1978 to 1982 and an instructor from 1982 to 1986 at Mid Michigan Community College, as well as a migrant program school nurse at Montcalm Intermediate School District in 1981. Ms. Kerr then served as a supervisor at Michigan Masonic Home from 1986 to 1989 and a public health nurse for the Mid Michigan District Health Department from 1989 to 2002.
Presently, Ms. Kerr dedicates her time to serving as a board member for the Saint Louis School Board and Alma Church of Nazarene, as well as being a Sunday school teacher to first and second graders. She is also a member of the Healthy Pine River Organization, Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, Gratiot County Historical and Genealogical Society. She is a former member of the Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and Phi Kappa Phi. Outside of her primary career, Ms. Kerr is well known in the farming community for her veterinary skills and her flock of spinning sheep. In addition to her work, she enjoys spending time with her children: Kerry, Kristin and Karmen; grandchildren: Chelsea, Kory, Ramsey, Cameron, Devon and Kellin; and great-grandchildren: Lexis, Livia, Ian, Erik, Lennon, Ronan, Sydney and Jaxon. To attest to her legacy, Ms. Kerr can also be found in multiple editions of Who’s Who in American Nursing, Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
