Thomas C. Rutan, APRN-BC, Advanced Practice Nurse at University Hospital of New Jersey, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in wound care nursing.
Mr. Rutan was attracted to the realm of health care from watching his mother excel as an LPM. Additionally, he always had the inexplicable feeling that serving others was his calling. Starting college, Mr. Rutan had intentions of becoming a mechanical engineer, but calculus proved him wrong and he chose an alternate route of study. In 1977, he received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas and went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing from the university in 1987. Today, and since 2019, Mr. Rutan has served as an advanced practice nurse in the Vascular and Wound Care Center at the University Hospital of New Jersey. Additionally, since 2001, he has excelled as a clinical instructor surgeon at the New Jersey Medical School.
Upon achieving his nursing degree, Mr. Rutan worked for the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital’s Burn Center as a staff nurse in 1977 before joining the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. From 1978 to 1981, he notably served as a staff nurse and flight nurse at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam in Houston, later earning a Letter of Accommodation for his contributions. Returning to the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, Mr. Rutan was a staff nurse of the Burn Intensive Care Unit from 1981 to 1983, later serving as a nurse clinician III at the Blocker Burn Center in 1994. For more than 10 years, Mr. Rutan dedicated his expertise to the Shriners Burns Institute in Galveston as a clinical research nurse, project leader of clinical information systems and assistant director of medical staff and research administration.
In 1994, Mr. Rutan joined the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a clinical nurse specialist for six years, supervising advanced practice nurse from 2002 to 2007 and acting director of education and professional development from 2007 to 2009. Simultaneously, he was a research study manager at University Physician Associates from 1999 to 2002 and a faculty practice manager at the New Jersey Medical School’s Department of Surgery from 2001 to 2005. Continuing to grow professionally in his field, Mr. Rutan was a PICC insertion APN at the University Hospital’s Department of Radiology from 2010 to 2013 and a coordinator and clinical nurse specialist at the Burn Center of Westchester Medical Center from 2013 to 2019.
Mr. Rutan currently holds membership with the American Nurses Association, New Jersey Nurses Association, American Burn Association, Planetary Society, Consumers Union and Nature Conservancy. Throughout the course of his illustrious career, the burn specialist was particularly honored to have been appointed to vice chairman of the Institutional Review Board at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as it was not something he had campaigned for nor expected. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Rutan and his accomplishments can also be found in various editions of Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Nursing, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
