Returning to the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, Mr. Rutan was a staff nurse of the Burn Intensive Care Unit from 1981 to 1983, later serving as a nurse clinician III at the Blocker Burn Center in 1994. For more than 10 years, Mr. Rutan dedicated his expertise to the Shriners Burns Institute in Galveston as a clinical research nurse, project leader of clinical information systems and assistant director of medical staff and research administration.

In 1994, Mr. Rutan joined the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a clinical nurse specialist for six years, supervising advanced practice nurse from 2002 to 2007 and acting director of education and professional development from 2007 to 2009. Continuing to grow professionally in his field, Mr. Rutan was a PICC insertion APN at the University Hospital’s Department of Radiology from 2010 to 2013 and a coordinator and clinical nurse specialist at the Burn Center of Westchester Medical Center from 2013 to 2019.
