Bijoy Kumar Mahanti, Nursing Administrator and Army Officer at the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing and military service.

Commencing his career at the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System in 2000, Mr. Mahanti served the facility in myriad capacities. Hired as a nurse manager of ambulatory care clinics, he advanced to associate chief nurse of managed care, risk manager of clinical services and risk manager for patient safety and performance improvement until his retirement in 2012. Prior to these appointments, he was a U.S. Army officer who was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1978, later advancing to lieutenant colonel, where he served throughout the nation and overseas in Germany. He concluded his military career as the director of nursing and deputy commander at the Kirk U.S. Army Health Clinic at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Mr. Mahanti has also been a clinical associate faculty member at Monterey Peninsula College and an associate faculty member at Midwestern State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Andrews University, Master of Science from the University of San Francisco and Master of Science in nursing from Indiana University. Additionally, he is a certified nurse executive through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and a former certified professional in utilization management and utilization review.

As a testament to his success, Mr. Mahanti received a Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and three Army Achievement Medals. He was also honored with a State Membership Award and District Public Relations Nurse of the Year Award by the Oklahoma Nurses Association. Notably, he was recognized by U.S. Senator Don Nickles in 1992 with a Letter of Recognition and earned two President’s Certificates for Achievement from Lions Club International in 2015 and 2018, among other accolades.
