Dr. Gallagher became involved in her profession due to the influence of her father who was a physician, as well as an administrator and the first officer promoted to the rank of Brigadier General outside of Washington in the U.S. Medical Corp. Dr. Gallagher credits him as an amazing mentor and role model, along with her mother who dedicated many of her hours to voluntary work. Dr. Gallagher earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Duke University in 1959 and from Incarnate Word College in 1961. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Nursing from Catholic University of America in 1969 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in urban services from Old Dominion University in 1991.
The highlight of Dr. Gallagher’s career were the opportunities she had to mentor nurse leaders who have gone on to accomplish great things in their own careers. During her career, she expanded the ‘Resource Mothers Program’ to reduce infant mortality among pregnant teenagers in Virginia and several other states. She established a Family Centered Program at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and fostered leadership development and advocacy skills among nurses. She now teaches at NAMI Homefront supporting family members of military personnel and veterans experiencing mental health concerns. Dr. Gallagher was a principal of the Margaret Gallagher and Associates Healthcare Consulting from 2008 until her retirement in 2012. Previously, she was with Ben Taub General Hospital from 2000 to 2008, where she held the positions of associate chief nursing officer and director of women and infant services. As a testament to her success, Dr. Gallagher has been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in American Nursing and Who’s Who in America.
