Sara Ann Young, Retired OB/GYN Clinical Nurse Specialist at Hartford Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical nursing.
Inspired to join the medical field after watching her mother excel as a nurse, Ms. Young was intrigued by the different components and challenges of the clinical nurse specialist role. Ms. Young commenced her career as a staff nurse at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1970, and from 1972 to 1974, she served the hospital as a head nurse of labor and delivery. She went on to serve the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. as a staff nurse from 1974 to 1978 before dedicating the tail end of her career to Hartford Hospital in Connecticut as an obstetrics-gynecology clinical nurse specialist from 1978 to 2011. Following a distinguished nursing career of more than 40 years, Ms. Young retired from her profession in 2011.
Ms. Young received a BSN from West Virginia University in 1970 and a MS in nursing from the Catholic University of America in 1977. To add to her expertise, she became a certified bereavement counselor and was an international board-certified lactation consultant. Specializing as a lactation specialist, Ms. Young was a key member in coordinating the efforts of the department of women’s health at Hartford Hospital in becoming designated as the first baby-friendly hospital in the state of Connecticut in 2000. She calls this accomplishment the highlight of her career, and was honored to travel the state and deliver formal presentations on the process of the hospital accomplishing this milestone.
Ms. Young was a member of the American Nurses Association and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, who granted her a Wyeth Laboratory Award and Plaque in 1989. To add to her recognitions and accolades, Ms. Young was the recipient of a Professional Award from La Leche League of Connecticut in 2001. Looking back on her career, Ms. Young attributes her success to a love of learning and a passion for relieving the suffering of others. She also credits early learning of the clinical nurse specialist role, from Betty Luginbuhl, a pediatric clinical nurse specialist at Hartford Hospital, who was an excellent mentor. In her free time, Ms. Young enjoys oil painting and plans to dedicate a large portion of her retirement to advocating for quality patient care. To attest to her career accomplishments, Ms. Young can also be found in numerous editions of Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Nursing and Who’s Who of American Women.
