Title: Oncology Patient Navigator

Melinda White McClendon, RN, BSN, Oncology Patient Navigator at Baptist Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in oncology nursing.
Inspired to work in a profession in which she could help people, Ms. McClendon was skilled in problem-solving, leading her to her perfect career match of nursing. In 1982, she achieved a BS in nursing from the University of Tennessee, and she soon later joined the team at the Baptist Hospital in Nashville as a staff nurse of the medical short-stay unit. Showing great prowess in her abilities, Ms. McClendon was promoted to head nurse of the surgical floor and now notably serves as an oncology patient nurse navigator for breast health. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. McClendon was most proud of becoming certified as a registered nurse intravenous, as the test was of high caliber and she studied and prepped for a great deal of time. She owes many thanks to her mentors, her biology professor from MTSU High and Cathleen Surface, for giving her much needed motivation and advice. Ms. McClendon hopes to pass down the advice she was given to other up and coming nurses, which is to stay patient, focused and up-to-date on the best practices, and do not be afraid to ask questions and collaborate with colleagues before moving forward.
In addition to her day to day duties as an oncology nurse, Ms. McClendon has shown her support to research and the community on various occasions. She has participated in the Medical Mission at Home where she screened people for the Mobile Lung Bus and connected them with an STHP appointment afterward for results, as well as the Great Catch Event with the Tennessee Titans recognizing breast cancer survivors. Additionally, she has participated in the Dell Event providing educational information to their employees for pertinent screening for health and wellness, the Susan G. Komen Walk For the Cure for Breast Cancer Awareness and an event at Mt. Zion Baptist Church providing educational regarding breast health. A member of the Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, Ms. McClendon and her accomplishments can also be found in the fourth and fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Nursing and the 22nd and 26th editions of Who’s Who of American Women.
