Margaret Brown, Nurse at Massachusetts Mental Health Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychiatric mental health nursing.
Growing up, Ms. Brown had frequent bouts of pneumonia, and her family never understood why. However, a kind nurse brought her medicine and took care of her. That inspired Ms. Brown to become a nurse. A graduate of Northwestern University, she received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1975 and 1994, respectively. Ms. Brown later became a registered nurse in the state of Massachusetts, as well as a mental health and adult psychiatric clinical nurse specialist.
Ms. Brown first worked as an assistant team leader with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston from 1975 to 1977. She later joined the Jewish Memorial Hospital as head nurse for three years, further assuming employment with the Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center as a medical nurse coordinator between 1981 and 1983. Consequently, she flourished as the clinical nurse coordinator for the Mattapan Community Health Center for three years, further accepting the position of director of staff development at Fuller Mental Center from 1985 to 1994. More recently, Ms. Brown contributed as a nurse clinician with the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston until her departure in 2016. The highlight of Ms. Brown’s career was making a difference in the lives of people in all the areas she worked in. She was also proud to have saved the life of one of her employees and also her mother’s life.
A member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Ms. Brown has maintained affiliation with the Massachusetts Nurse Foundation, the Massachusetts Nurse Association, the New England Regional Black Nurses Association, and the National Black Nurses Association. In the coming years, she would like to continue practicing part-time as a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist. Ms. Brown aims to make a difference in the lives of people who have mental health issues.
