Francena Riley, Nurse, Retired Non-Commissioned Officer at EmoryHealthcare, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of medicine.
After watching her mother work as a caregiver to the seniors in their neighborhood, Ms. Riley she too wanted to help people. She enlisted in the U.S. Army to establish a career and chose nursing because in addition to wanting to do what her mother did for others, she wanted a transferable skill once she left service. Ms. Riley enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1980 and was a practical nurse in the emergency room at Keller Army Hospital in West Point, New York, in 1981. Between 1981 and 1987, she contributed as a practical nurse in the pediatric ward at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a practical nurse and nursing supervisor for the 913th Medical Detachment, and as the ward master of the surgery clinic at the Army Regional Medical Center. She earned an Associate of Arts in general studies from the University of Maryland University College in 1987 and from 1988 to 1989, she completed battalion training as a noncommissioned officer in the 34th Medical Battalion.
Rising through grades to achieve sergeant first class in 1991, Ms. Riley worked as a practical nurse at the 2nd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) and the ward master in the intensive care unit. Notably, she was a part of the 2nd MASH medical brigade for Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia and from 1991 to 1994, she was an operations officer with the aforementioned hospital and the ward master of the newborn nursery at the U.S. Army MEDDAC. In the same year, Ms. Riley obtained a Bachelor of Science in human services at Upper Iowa University. She remained at the MEDDAC for an additional year as the ward master of the medical surgical unit before her retirement from military service in 1995.
Working as a distribution clerk for the United States Postal Service from 1995 to 2000, Ms. Riley graduated from Central Michigan University with a Master of Arts in 2001. She found success as an anesthesia nurse at Northside Hospital form 2002 to 2004 and a junior planner at Eagle Group International, Inc. from 2004 to 2006, while also fulfilling her passion for teaching as an adjunct instructor at Georgia Perimeter College from 2001 to 2010. Within that time, Ms. Riley also contributed her skills as an IRS tax examiner. Beginning in 2015, she excelled as a nurse with EmoryHealthcare until she retired in 2019.
In a career of many positions and experiences, Ms. Riley is most proud of being a parent to her son. For her time in the U.S. Army, she received an Expert Field Medical Badge, a Parachutist Badge, and a Meritorious Service Medal 34th Clasp.
