Florence Lynn Sandberg, Retired Nursing Supervisor at Singer Mental Health Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nursing for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geriatric nursing.

As a child, Ms. Sandberg suffered from polio. Doctors explained to her parents that she might never be able to walk; however, she beat the expectations and was nursed back to full health. Crediting the nurses and their care for helping her live a normal life, Ms. Sandberg felt compelled to take the same career path as an adult. A graduate of the Swedish-American Hospital School of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois, Ms. Sandberg earned a diploma in 1963. Soon thereafter, she joined her alum as a registered nurse staff of medical surgery, where she remained until 1965.

After briefly working as a recovery room nurse at the Brevard Hospital in Melbourne, Florida for a year, Ms. Sandberg was hired as a nurse staff for the intensive care unit at Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital from 1966 to 1967, she accepted the position of registered industrial nurse with the Chrysler Corporation in Belvidere, Illinois for a year, before working as a nursing supervisor for the Singer Mental Health Center in Rockford from 1971 until her retirement in 2002. In the past, she contributed to the Javon Bea Hospital-Rockton in Illinois as an assistant head nurse on the surgical floor.

In addition to her primary pursuits, Ms. Sandberg has been a member of the University Illinois Council on Continuing Education since 1983. The highlight of her career was more than 30 years she spent working at Singer Mental Health Center as a geriatric nurse. Every day was a challenge, and this was the motivational force that kept her coming back to work. For her accomplishments in the field, she has been a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and was selected for inclusion in multiple versions of Who’s Who in American Nursing and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
