Dr. Noura Iskendar Kassis, Retired Nursing Educator at Mount San Antonio College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing.
Dr. Kassis became involved in her profession because her dad was an obstetrician/gynecologist and she grew up in Syria where women were treated as second-class citizens. She, however, was fortunate to get her schooling and had the best quality teachers. She wanted to be a physician but her dad said to her that if she wanted to be a physician that was fine, but that she would never work a day in her life because women in Syria were not treated equally. Nonetheless, he sent her to the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and when it came time for her to cut up cadavers, she realized she was not able to do it. She was 18 years old at the time. She went home and told her dad and he suggested she take nursing. He told her it was a very noble profession, and that she could use her knowledge in taking care of her family in the future. She did take up nursing as her major and loved it but just a short time before graduation she found out that it does not pay much so she decided to go for her Master’s Degree on the advice of a director. She told her dad what she wanted to do and he sent her to the US to get her masters. Dr. Kassis earned a BSN from the American University in Beirut in 1965. From there she earned an MSN from the University of California Los Angeles in 1967 and in 1983, she received an EdD from Nova University.
The highlight of Dr. Kassis’ career was being there for the terminally ill patients because they needed someone and the patients were very appreciative of her. She considered those patients like her family. Dr. Kassis began her professional career at Mount San Antonio College in 1967. While there, she held the roles of professor, assistant director and director of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program. Although she retired in 2003 from Mt. San Antonio College, she continued to teach part-time until 2018. She also taught part-time at California State University, Dominguez Hills in the baccalaureate and masters programs, and at the University of Phoenix in the baccalaureate and masters programs from 1988 until 2017. Dr. Kassis has been a member of the American Nurses Association, the California Teacher’s Association, and the National League of Nursing. Furthermore, she has been listed in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in American Education, the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Nursing, and the 23rd and 24th edition of Who’s Who in the West.
