Betsy Mickey McDowell PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, Retired Professor and Chair the Department of Nursing at Newberry College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neonatal care.

Dr. McDowell became involved in her profession because she always knew that she liked working with young children. If she would not have become a nurse, she would have become an early childhood educator because she likes working with young children such as toddlers and the young age groups. Dr. McDowell matriculated at the University of South Carolina, earning her BSN in 1971. She then went to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her MSN in 1975. Twenty-two years later, she earned a PhD in nursing science at the University of South Carolina in 1997.

While earning her degrees, Dr. McDowell began her career by getting a position as a staff nurse at Self Memorial Hospital in 1971, earning the title of head nurse of pediatrics in 1973 and remained on staff there until 1989. Also in 1971, she became a member of the nursing faculty at Lander University and stayed on staff there until 2007. During her time at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. McDowell was a staff nurse at North Carolina Memorial Hospital from 1973 to 1975. In 1988, she became a staff nurse for the pediatric ICU/pediatric intermediate ICU at the Children’s Hospital from 1988 to 2002. From there, she moved on to the neonatal ICU at Self Regional Healthcare from 2002 to 2009. Dr. McDowell became a professor and chair of the department of nursing at Newberry College in 2007 until she retired in 2019, and claimed the title of emeritus faculty. As a testament to her success, Dr. McDowell received myriad accolades including the Palmetto Gold Award from the South Carolina Nurses Foundation in 2006 and the Nursing Excellence Award from the South Carolina League for Nursing in 2005, to name a few. She has also been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America and the 28th edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
