Title: Gerontology Nurse, Staff Nurse
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
Diane Marie Miller, RN, BSN, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing.
When Ms. Miller was nine years old, she saw a movie by Bing Crosby titled “Little Boy Lost.” Depicted in the movie was a nun in an orphanage who took care of a little boy who needed someone to look after him. The film left a lasting impact on Ms. Miller, who felt deeply that the crux of human interaction and existence is to ensure that no one feels alone and that everyone is cared for in the best way possible. As she moved into adolescence, that meant volunteering her time as a 13-year-old girl to working at a hospital sorting X-rays and as a candy striper. When Ms. Miller was old enough, she became a nurse aid at the same hospital and worked hard to eventually become a staff nurse.
In 1966, Ms. Miller earned a diploma and distinction as a registered nurse from the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing. From there, she established herself as a staff nurse at its hospital, the St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center, located in Toledo, Ohio. She dedicated the next 52 years of her life and career to working as a nurse at several hospitals including St. Vincent Hospital, St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital and the Presbyterian Novant Health Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Along the way, Ms. Miller supported her professional development by continuing her education. In 1982, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Eastern Michigan University.
Ms. Miller possesses expertise in nursing in the areas of cardiology, intensive care, telemetry and orthopedics. She has been successful in her career due to her commitment, impeccable follow-through, love of caring for others and her social skills. In her free time, Ms. Miller volunteers her time to help the elderly. “The elderly are more susceptible to scams and it’s my personal passion to help ensure it doesn’t occur,” she says, adding that having worked firsthand with older persons has allowed her to see their vulnerabilities. In fact, she co-founded the Golden Opportunities Day Center for the Elderly in Brighton, Michigan, for which she has been vice president and health coordinator to help the elderly in need. Looking ahead, Ms. Miller plans to continue helping others as much as she can through her current responsibilities and new opportunities that arise.
