Gloria Joyce Dickman, RN, Geriatrics Nurse at Nursing Services Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elder care.
Ms. Dickman grew up in Central Baptist Church and her pastor Ken Maxwell had asked her if she would participate in the college program while she was in high school. The church knowing her dedication wanted her to work with the mission and offered to pay for her seminary. It was at that point she said no because she was interested in medicine and was not that ambitious in her studies to do the college program. It was around that time in high school that she decided to go into nursing and was in the first program created for the practical nurse license. She felt there was someone above and beyond guiding her into what she should do. Ms. Dickman earned a BA in guidance counseling from Bob Jones University in 1988. After that, she earned an AS in general studies from Manchester Community College in 1992 and an ASN from the University of the State of New York in 1993.
The highlight of Ms. Dickman’s career was her time spent taking care of a doctor’s mother, who in the middle of winter went outside barefoot under her watch. She saw that she was missing from her bedside, went looking for her and while looking heard a knock on the door. It was the doctor’s mom. She called the doctor to tell him what happened, he told her to bundle her up, and she would be ok. She considered that a highlight because she found the mother and the doctor was so understanding. Ms. Dickman started out as a staff charge nurse at the Salmon Brook Convalescent in 1964. She remained in the position until 1976, from there she became a pool nurse at the Nursing Services, Inc. in 1981 until 1999, when she retired. During that time, she was also a registered nurse supervisor from 1993 to 1995 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center. As a testament to her success, Ms. Dickman has been inducted as a member of the Hospice Council of Connecticut, the Connecticut Authors Association and the Association of Death Education & Counseling. She has also been listed in the 51st and 54th editions of Who’s Who in America.
