Mrs. Kanode initially she wanted to become an English teacher but due to her circumstances, she couldn’t go to college. Instead, she went to Abington Hospital and saw that nursing was a wonderful career so she applied to hospitals and received two scholarships. She wanted to be able to help people and knew nursing would be a good fit for her. Mrs. Kanode graduated with a Bachelor of Science cum laude from California State University in Long Beach, California in 1976. From there, she earned a Master of Science from Pepperdine University in 1984.
Mrs. Kanode is a co-founder of a youth shelter in the city of Huntington Beach, California. While working as a school nurse, she encountered a girl who was abandoned by her mother. This girl went to her neighbor to get some help and tried to enroll herself into high school but since she didn’t have a parent’s signature Child Protective Services was called to help. This caused the girl to run away from the high school. When the girl came back three months later, she was in worse stature than before. Mrs. Kanode and her friend Irene, a social worker, wanted to help girls like her so they built the shelter. She is currently a school nurse practitioner and a pediatric nurse. Mrs. Kanode is also the president of the American Association of University Women. From 1998 to 2008, she was the coordinator of the Huntington Beach Union High School District Health Start Medical. As a testament to her success, she has been included in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
