Mrs. Calhoun was inspired to become a nurse by her grandmother, who was a beloved Mexican herbalist that took care of babies in the neighborhood. Her grandmother encouraged her to go into nursing and Mrs. Calhoun followed suit, earning a BSN from Texas Woman’s University in 1976. She became a registered nurse in California and Texas and soon found her way to care for patients from the administrative side. Since 2018, she has provided her skills and expertise as a consultant. Her background in this comes from decades of hard work in the field, holding such positions as Director of Quality and Outcomes Management at Texas Children’s Health Plan, as Associate Vice President of Quality of Amerigroup Texas, as CEO of The Victorian and administrator and CEO of the Victoria Care Center.

In 1980, Mrs. Calhoun earned an MEd from the University of Houston in order to better suit her environs. She considers the highlight of her career to be her tenure at Victoria Care Center in Ventura, California. The facility had major issues with patient care. When she arrived, she became the go-to person; her expertise was needed and welcomed. The facility went from being known for its poor patient care to being an award winning facility with positive articles being published about it. In 2017, Mrs. Calhoun was recognized on the Houston Chronicle’s 150 Top Nurses in Houston list. She has also received the Best of Blue Awards from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and many awards and accolades for her innovative practices.
