Title: Medical/Surgical Nurse, Ordained Minister
Location: Brooklyn, New York, United States
Rev. Dr. Elverine Cadogan-Smartt, Medical and Surgical Nurse, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing and religious services.
Rev. Dr. Smartt became involved in her profession as a result of growing up with an aunt, Francina Sorzano, because her mother passed away when she was eight years old. Her aunt brought a friend who was very ill to live with them and Rev. Dr. Smartt spent a lot of time caring for this friend as she loved being able to help others. She first started in education, teaching at 17 before deciding to go into nursing at 20. She earned a diploma from Georgetown Hospital, a Master of Science in administration from Central Michigan University and a doctor certificate in biblical studies from the Universal Life Church. In addition, Rev. Dr. Smartt became certified at the Kingsboro Psychiatric Institute and St. John’s Hospital.
Prior to retiring, Rev. Dr. Smartt served as the head nurse of Brookdale Hospital Medical Center. She had previous experience as assistant head nurse of emergency rooms at Interboro General Hospital, and has held various other leadership positions at both hospitals throughout the years. In addition, Rev. Dr. Smartt accepted Christ as her personal savior and decided to get into the ministry not only for herself but to teach others. She teaches Sunday school, sings in the choir, and is involved in various organizations within the church. She has received recognition for her work such as the Caribbean American Healthcare Award, a State of New York Legislative citation from the Nurse of Excellence in the Community and was designated as Nurse of the Year by Women of Distinction in the Community.
