Title: Nurse Midwife, Educators
Location: Burlington, Iowa, United States
Carolyn Miller, Nurse Midwife and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical nursing and midwifery.
Ms. Miller was introduced to the wonders of medicine through her own personal experience of getting surgery when she was 13 years old. She was tended by the nurses at the University of Iowa Hospital and realized the care and professionalism she received was something she wanted to do for others. In pursuit of this profession, Ms. Miller first earned a diploma from the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses in 1959 and continued at the University of Iowa to receive a BSN in 1962. She continued her studies at the Elsie Inglis Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, whereupon she became a state certified midwife. Ms. Miller returned to the US to earn a Master of Arts in nursing of children from the University of Iowa in 1971. In 1977, she became a certified nurse midwife by Booth Maternity Hospital.
Since 1990, Ms. Miller has been a part of the clinical staff and a certified nurse midwife at the Maternal Health Center in Bettendorf, IA. She previously has supplied her skills and care with Frontier Nursing Service, the Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing, the Cuttington University College in Liberia and the University of Iowa. In many of these roles, she prepared future generations of nursing and midwife professionals. Ms. Miller is also credited with being a founding faculty member of the nurse-midwifery educational program at the Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing. The highlight of Ms. Millers’ career was working in Liberia over the years and enjoyed it because of all the people that she encountered.
In recognition of her work, Ms. Miller has received the Knight Commander of Liberian Humane Order of African Redemption from the Preside of Liberia, William Tolbert Jr. in 1976. She received the Gratitude for Outstanding Service accolade from the Cuttington College Board of Directors in 1994 and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses in 1990. She has maintained professional affiliation with the American College of Nurse Midwifery and Sigma Theta Tau.
